WWII bomb removed from Thames

A WWII unexploded bomb was removed from the River Thames last night (19th January 2017). Both Waterloo Bridge and Westminster Bridge were shut whilst specialists from the Royal Navy  attempted to recover the item of UXO.

Today we woke up to reports of a huge unexploded World War II bomb being identified at a building site near Tower Bridge, in Southwark, south London.

 

With 1,200 households now evacuated while the Army manages the safe removal of the device, it highlights the importance of undertaking Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) assessments at the outset of any building development works, as the probability of identifying UXO originating from the Second World War might not be as uncommon as you think.

Riffgat, the 108MW wind farm off the coast of Germany, has encountered delays due to unexploded ordnance (UXO) found along the export cable route. The impacts of these delays have cost €43m, whilst a further €57m has been spent on munitions clearance.

WWII Bomb Disposal Officer's Life

At the end of last year, former Bomb Disposal Officer Eric Wakeling passed away. The article linked below succintly highlights some of the risks posed by unexploded bombs in WWII, which is also the reason 6 Alpha manages and mitigates those risks today, both on land and offshore.

 

People such as Eric risked their lives, and effectively "wrote the EOD book" as they went along, knowledge which saved countless more Bomb Disposal Officers' lives throughout WWII and beyond.
