Unexploded Ordnance - Case study

A National Construction Company - Case study

Client:
A National Construction Company

Project
Mixed-use development on a former Ministry of Defence (MoD) site in South of England

Risks/Problem
The MoD used the site during the Second World War. In preparation for enemy invasion the War Office instructed pipemines to be installed along the runway. Official MoD reports suggest that remnants of these pipemines may remain on site.  In addition there is the residual risk that both German unexploded bombs (UXBs) and British UXO may also contaminate the site.

Our Solution
6 Alpha Associates were engaged to conduct:

•  Holistic Threat and Risk Assessment.
•  Production of an Invitation to Tender (ITT) for Explosive Ordnance Risk Mitigation.
•  Specialist contractor assessment selection.
•  Project sign-off.

Benefits
The client has experienced 3 key benefits:

•  The ability to obtain key information for governmental sources to ‘zone’ the risk
    across the site.
•  Development of a pragmatic and economic risk mitigation strategy.
•  Demonstration that the residual risk conforms to the ALARP principle.
