6 Alpha Associates offers bespoke and innovative solutions, delivering UXO mitigation

We offer several different levels of on-site UXO mitigation, which are driven by the findings of a detailed UXO threat and risk assessment. Our focus is to deliver only solutions that are beneficial, necessary, and proportional to the risks posed. These services are outlined below:

  • Emergency Response Plan

    6 Alpha’s Emergency Response Plans aims to provide strategic guidance to site management teams and bespoke operational guidance to site operatives about the UXO risk. The plans provide:

    • Data about the associated UXO threat, which will form part of site induction;
    • Linkage and congruence with UXO Tool Box Briefs (TBB);
    • Risk mitigation measures that may be required in advance of on site work;
    • An outline plan for managing an unplanned UXO encounter;
    • Detailed actions to take, in the event of such an encounter.

    The plan is informed by our Detailed UXO Threat and Risk assessment (DTRA) and is provided for sites where a DTRA has already been completed.  Plans are generally delivered in advance of on-site TBB.

    Benefits

    • Site workers in general and ground workers in particular, know what actions to take if UXO is unexpectedly encountered;
    • Site Management know what safety and other actions to take upon such a discovery;
    • Such plans are compliant with best practice (CIRIA C681);
    • Corporate duties, imposed by legislation (eg HSE) and regulations (eg CDM) are discharged.
  • Online Toolbox Brief

    Subject to the level of UXO threat and risk identified in a 6 Alpha Associates detailed report (low or medium risk rating), tool box briefs can be streamed online, in order to confirm worker understanding and concurrently to satisfy proactive risk mitigation requirements, in accordance with best practice (CIRIA).

    Benefits:

    • Consistency and quality of briefing delivery with an individual assessment, not only confirming understanding but also ensuring that worker responses are congruent, swift, and safe;
    • Flexibility of TBB delivery; briefs can be streamed at any time or place, and to an audience of any size, to suit the project and the schedule;
    • Economy; on line steaming is highly effective, removing costs ordinarily associated with mobilisation;
    • A record of each individuals training is automatically generated, creating a managerial safety-audit trail.

    This meets the regulations set by CDM 2015, which require that all site workers are aware of any potential hazards associated with their workplace. N.B these TBBs are only applicable to sites with an appropriate risk rating as identified in a 6 Alpha Associates detailed threat and risk assessment report.  Click the link below to order the Online Toolbox Brief.

    Benefits:

    • Tool Box briefing delivery by a qualified EOD Engineer;
    • Q&A session delivering clarity and reassurance;
    • The capacity to instantly identify potential UXO and to verity it as benign or confirmed UXO;
    • Time saving arising from false positive UXO identification;
    • Professional incident management if real UXO is discovered including liaison with and a briefing of, the emergency services.

  • Non Intrusive Survey

    As part of our proactive suite of UXO risk mitigation measures, and where it is conidered suitable and appropriate,  6 Alpha will design and implement a non-intrusive UXO survey, employing state-of-the-art commercial survey equipment, in order to confirm the absence of UXO.

    The data collected is subsequently analysed by our experienced geophysicist and EOD Engineer team, in order to establish whether there are any potential anomalies requiring further investigation. If surveyed items model as potential UXO (pUXO), they will need to be investigated for verifciation purposes (and see separate service provision below).

    Benefits:

    • Wide area coverage can be quickly delivered, offering best value;
    • The commercial off-the shelf survey and data logging systems are employed;
    • An interim report and accompanying data map, are delivered on completion of the survey;
    • UXO risks are verifiable and an audit trial is provided;
    • Minimal environmental impact.

    Benefits:

    • Point specific vertcial coverage can be quickly delivered, either ahead of, or in sequnce with on-site GI activities;
    • Commercial off-the shelf survey systems are employed by trained and certified personnel;
    • Down hole clearance is provided as the work proceeds;
    • A survey record is delivered on completion of the survey;
    • UXO risks are therefore verifiable and an audit trial is provided.

  • MagCone UXB Survey

    Where non-intrusive or down hole survey is likely to be ineffective or inefficient, and/or where a significant quantity of surveys are required, 6 Alpha’s intrusive MagCone UXB Survey provides an alternative option, as part of our proactive suite of risk mitigatin services.

    MagCone UXB Survey techniques are offered where mass piling or simialr engineering is to be undertaken, and/or a detailed UXO threat and risk assessment recorded a higher risk of UXO encounter, and/or where or the estimated bomb penetration depth is beyond the limit of a non-intrusive survey then in such circumstances MagCone UXB Survey enables multiple pile positions to be surveyed quickly.

    Benefits:

    • Point specific, deep vertical coverage can be delivered, concurrent with GI (soil shear strength) activities, or ahead of piling;
    • The Cone Penetrometer Test (CPT) system is significantly faster and therefore much more cost effective than manual down-hole techniques;
    • Commercial off-the shelf survey systems are employed by trained and certified personnel and incorporated into CPT equipment;
    • Potential UXO (pUXO) risks can be highlighted as the survey work proceeds;
    • Off-site analysis of the UXO survey data, quickly corroborates or discounts initial pUXO findings;
    • Horizontal radial coverage also allows the survey burden to be significantly reduced, thus saving time and cost;
    • A report is delivered on completion of the survey;
    • UXO risks are verifiable and an audit trial is provided;
    • ALARP safety-sign off is invariably delivered.

    Benefits:

    • Verifies the status of potential UXO (pUXO) as a result of various types of UXO survey activities;
    • pUXO that is in fact benign, can be immediately discounted as a non-UXO risk;
    • Confirmed UXO (cUXO) can be classified as either safe to move (to a temporary cache, thus enabling work to continue) or;
    • cUXO that is classified as either unsafe to move or otehrwise as dangerous, can be cordoned, which may enabling work to continue;
    • A report is delivered on completion of the survey;
    • UXO risks are verifiable as  a result of investigation and an audit trial is provided;
    • ALARP safety-sign off is invariably delivered following target investigation work.
