Offshore Services

6 Alpha Associates offers bespoke and innovative solutions to offshore UXO mitigation

6 Alpha offers several different levels of offshore mitigation, depending upon the findings of the detailed UXO threat and risk assessment. Our focus is to deliver only solutions that are beneficial, necessary, and proportional to the risks posed. These services are outlined below:

  • Offshore Emergency Response Plan

    An ERP provides offshore managers with a straightforward but usable, instant response guide that can employed if UXO is unexpectedly encountered during operations.  We also deliver emergency response training, on and offshore.

    Benefits

    • Each ERP is founded upon emergency management experience, accumulated from our significant involvement in operational UXO responses;
    • Each plan is bespoke, not only accounting for project UXO threats and risks, but also the type of operations being undertaken and the kind of vessels and equipment employed;
    • The emergency response training package not only ensures that crew roles and responsibilities are clear, but also that safety duties and responsibilities are understood;
    • The ERP provides essential detail upon which a safety and awareness brief is delivered, usually in the form of Tool Box Briefs.  Such a brief can be delivered in person and on site, or in certain circumstances, it can be streamed online.

  • Geophysical Survey Specification

    6 Alpha can design geophysical survey specifications for your project which will be suitable for the detction of those items of UXO in the threat spectrum as classified in the desktop study. The geophysical survey design is likely to employ in principal, high-resolution side scan sonar and magnetometry/gradiometry solutions, not only suitable for the detection of threat spectrum UXO but also to inform any subsequent ALARP safety sign-off certificate.

    Benefits

    • With experience accumulated from our involvement in more than 80 offshore projects, we have a significant and relevant track-record of designing and validating UXO surveys;
    • Survey specification is firmly linked to UXO DTS and designed/verified for the detection of threat spectrum UXO, thus providing risk management congruence;
    • Juxtaposition and deployment of survey instruments is designed so that one prospective survey platform does not compromise the employment of the other(s);
    • The specification of the survey equipment will be tailored to deliver the degree of resolution required to detect and categorise UXO.

    For further details about this service please contact us.

  • Survey Verification Testing and Surrogate Item Provision

    In accordance with UXO risk management best practice (CIRIA), a UXO survey is to be the subject of independently supervised Survey Verification Test (sometimes known as a wet-test or prove-out), in order to verify the quality of the survey raw data and to ensure that the holistic data capture and processing method, will not only be sufficient to identify those anomalies that might be associated with threat spectrum UXO, but also and subsequently to support other UXO risk management processes.  6 Alpha can also provide Survey Verification Test specification which will assist the geophysical survey provider in:

    • The selection of a suitable area to emplace the surrogate items;
    • To benchmark the trial methodology with the survey protocols employed for those UXO survey(s) that will be subsequently conducted;
    • To evaluate and establish survey, target picking and data processing confidence.

    Although surrogates are not designed to replicate the geophysical survey responses that might be generated by real items of UXO, their use is nontheless helpful, in generating a known magnetic and sonar response.  6 Alpha has an extensive stock of surrogate items to suit most survey campaigns including non-ferrous targets for sonar trials.

    6 Alpha can not only provide the surrogate items for use in these trials, but can also design the survey verification trial specification and process the data that is collected.

    Benefits

    • 6 Alpha will employ our geophysicist and EOD Engineer team (where deployed together) in order to highlight any configuration or deployment issues during the trial – thus saving subsequently, survey time and resources;
    • We will corroborate that the survey is fit for purpose, especially magnetometer flying altitude and positional accuracy;
    • We will confirm that the holistic mechanism for capturing and processing raw data is both effective and efficient;
    • We provide, from stock, high quality, properly manufactured and controlled surrogates, with known provenance and expected magnetic responses;
    • All of our surrogates are marked, numbered and subject to a maintenance and refurbishment regime as well as configuration control, thus ensuring high quality;
    • All 6 Alpha surrogates (over a certain size/mass) have designated lifting points and up-to-date load test certification, thus enabling their safe handling and deployment;
    • Subject to client requirements 6 Alpha will arrange for international surrogate delivery and collection from the survey port of embarkation.

  • Data Processing and Interpretation

    6 Alpha will provide an indigenous raw data (or post processed data), survey processing and interpretation service for magnetometery (Mag) data, employing Oasis Montaj (UX Marine) software, in order to identify those geophysical survey anomalies that model as potential UXO (pUXO).  Our experienced geophysicists are backed by advanced level EOD Engineers expert opinions and have the ability to reduce the number of false positive pUXO anomalies to the absolute minimum, saving both time and cost in terms of unnecessary avoidance and/or target investigation.  Typically, our analysis will be enhanced and supplemented by the provision of high resolution side scan sonar data. Occasionally, high-resolution multi-beam echo sounder data can also be helpful for target discrimination purposes. Such geophysical anomalies will be either avoided or, subject to the juxtaposition of planned instructive activities, investigated. We regularly provide geophysicist and EOD Engineer teams to deliver this work, either onshore or offshore.

    Benefits

    • The number of false positive Mag anomalies (i.e. those targets which model as UXO but are in fact junk and/or are otherwise benign), are reduced to an absolute minimum;
    • Target investigation is reduced, with reductions in schedule and cost;
    • Post processed data is guaranteed to be of sufficient quality to inform and support 6 Alpha’s ALARP safety sign-off certification;
    • The data processing and ALARP sign-off certificate process can be be back-to-back and seamless;
    • The risk of delay in either data processing, target investigation or production of ALARP safety sign-off certificates, is significantly reduced.

  • Remote and On call Services

    We are pleased to offer our Clients remote and on-call services in circumstances were advice is required, but does not permanently require our personnel on board vessels.  We offer the following services:

    • Tool Box Briefs; where 6 Alpha have an EOD Engineer on board, Tool Box Briefs (TBB) concerning UXO hazards can be delivered in person.  But where TBB are required and an EOD Engineer is not on board, we offer a remote TBB service where appropriate information, in the form of a presentation, can be streamed directly to offshore participants. Remote TBB meet client and legal requirements, which require offshore teams to be aware of any potential hazards, including UXO.
    • EOD Engineers On-Call: Again, if an EOD Engineer is not on board but services are either required on an occasional or perhaps an emergency basis, then 6 Alpha’s team of on-call EOD Engineers can be immediately mobilised to respond via telephone or email, within a few minutes of our Operations Centre being contacted.  We provide on-call services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
    • Emergency Response Plans: where offshore operations might inadvertently encounter UXO, 6 Alpha offer vessel (and other types of) Emergency Response Plan (ERP), which aim to provide strategic guidance to project (and other) managers about UXO risks and how to manage them.  ERP typically provide:
      • Data about UXO  – which may be linked to TBB;
      • An outline plan for managing an unexpected UXO discovery;
      • Guidance on immediate action  – what to do and who to contact  – which may be linked to EOD Engineers On Call;
      • A simple aid-memoir (with supporting notes), in the form of a flow-chart, to guide vessels’ management in the event of a UXO encounter.

    Benefits

    • Remote TBB have not only delivered a consistently high quality service but also,  when appropriately employed and in the right circumstances, they have aslo saved our Clients time and significant expense;
    • On-call EOD Engineers deliver timely advice remotely which, when appropriately employed and in the right circumstances, can generate significant cost savings;
    • In accordance with best practice, ERP both prepare for and enhance, emergency management routines  – helping Clients to deliver a high degree of safety awareness and preparedness.

  • Munitions Migration Assessments

    Munitions can and do migrate across the seabed however, the magnitude and direction of movement is often quite limited. What are the factors that should be considered?  How far might munitions move and in what circumstances?  6 Alpha’s Munitions Migration Assessment (MMA) uses met-ocean, getoechnical, bathymetric and seabed morphology data, together with the outputs of our UXO desk study, to estimate what types of munitions are liable to migrate with respect to time.

    Benefits

    • MMA can be used to inform the likely longevity of any geophysical UXO survey;
    • An MMA may negate the requirement for any additional ‘just-in-time’ survey prior to installation works being undertaken;
    • MMA inform and assure third parties about prospective munitions movement;
    • MMA data can be tied into holistic UXO risk management assessments in general and ALARP safety sign off certification in paticular.

  • Technical Advisory Notes

    6 Alpha offer written Technical Advisory Notes (TAN) to determine the safety avoidance radii for individual types of intrusive works associated with any offshore project. TANs will be drafted in suffcient detail, not only to inform our Client about technical matters, but also to reassure their prospective contractors, insurers and other stakeholders that UXO risks posed to specific investigative and/or installation operations can be reduced ALARP.  Typical TAN topics associated with UXO risks include:

    • Underwater fragmentation and shock wave effects on a variety of temporary and/or installed infrastructure.
    • Determining UXO anomaly avoidance radii;
    • Energy and risks associated Geotechnical Investigations;
    • Cable installation risks by various installation methodologies;
    • Cable repair risks;
    • Diver impact risks;
    • Mattress Emplacement;
    • Rock emplacement;
    • Boulder relocation;
    • Jack-up leg deployment;
    • Anchoring.

    Benefits

    • TAN allow UXO safety avoidance radii to be determined for each bespoke operation;
    • TAN enables survey swath width or area, to be determined to expressly suit the operation being undertaken and therefore reduces time and cost when conducting subsequent geophysical UXO survey;
    • TAN support ALARP safety sign off certification and provide technical assurance to all parties involved in each specific operation;
    • Collectively, the delivery of TAN not only deliver and evidence project safety, but can also drive significant schedule and cost savings.
